ROCK 2016 PROM DRESSES IN A CLASSIC LBD

This post is contributed by Mediabuzzer

You don’t have to be one of those girls who keep a well-worn copy of Truman Capote’s Breakfast at Tiffany on your nightstand, or have a large, looming graceful poster of Audrey Hepburn as Holly Golightly, to embrace the notion of the Little Black Dress. Any fashionista knows that a wardrobe is never complete without the iconic LBD, and now, girls can leave the Lady Gaga and Amy Winehouse styling influences to their more outrĂ© classmates.

A girl in the know will choose, amongst 2016 prom dresses, an LBD, whether it be without-irony classic or a savvy deconstructed version. These days, boutiques acknowledge and even celebrate the popularity of that ubiquitous LBD. Stores that specialise in prom dresses, like Chicago’s Peaches Boutique even offer “Little Black Dress” as a pull-down option on their website’s search engine.

Along with Dorothy’s going-to-Oz dress and Scarlett O’Hara’s drapery dress, Hepburn’s Hubert de Givenchy black dress is the most iconic of all-time; it even has its own entry on Wikipedia! The sleeveless, long, black sheath is accessorized: opera-length black gloves, a multi-string choker of pearls, a tiara over dramatically streaked hair, and, finally, a foot-long cigarette holder. What most people don’t know is that Givenchy’s original design were actually used in the Blake Edward film. Givenchy’s original design featured a slit so high that too much of Hepburn’s legs were exposed. The bottom-half of the dress was repurposed and redesigned by super studio costumer designer Edith Head. One of the actual dresses, worn by Oscar-winner Natalie Portman for the November 2006 cover of Harper’s Bazaar, was later auctioned off for charity for nearly $1 million.

The Long

You don’t want to completely bogart Hepburn’s look for prom – it would be too costume-y, but you can certainly be inspired by the many available dresses. Here are a few favorites:

Tony Bowl’s supersexy dress would’ve merited a nix by MPAA critics, but it harkens back to the basic stylings of the Hepburn dress, here with beading, illusion lace, and killer leg-exposing slit.

This Gigi dress is a near silhouette replica of Hepburn’s, but with a twist: a beaded bodice, and skirt with an overlay of tulle on black lace, with a nude-lining.

This gorgeous Blush gown features the classic silhouette, but with a sweetheart neckline, covered with plain illusion lace. Bursting out from the empire waist are cascades of rhinestones, a perfectly sparkly prom LBD.

Acourt train is just the slightest over-the-top touch to this TarikEdiz gown. TarikEdiz has several styles similar to the classic Hepburn dress. The one above features a formfitting torso, but the statement accent is at the center of the chest, with beading and scrolls.

Mori Lee knows how to do 2016 prom dresses, as this dress, a jersey and lace halter-styled top demonstrates. This dress is beautiful and elegant, and will give the wearer a look of glamour and grace.

If the previous Tarik Ediz dress with the court train was slightly over-the-top, then this gown has it beat. The open neckline is more daring than the classic Hepburn gown, and the Chapel train will make this dress a bit of a challenge on the prom dance floor but it will photograph beautifully and anyone who wears this will feel like a princess.

The Short

If you’re looking for a dress that offers you the full Hepburn LBD vibe, but you want to be able to wear on several occasions, this short TarikEdiz is the gown for you. The embellished panels under the arms add a little bit of bling.

This is yet another TarikEdiz, but the designer has an excellent handle on what constitutes as Little Black Dress. Fitted and flattering, the deceptively simple sheath dress features a stunning hem of lace and beading.

This Alyce dress, with ruching, illusion lace and beaded appliques may epitomize the deconstructed version of Hepburn’s “Breakfast at Tiffany’s” gown. An open and low backline is a sexy surprise.
